Monseñor Girolamo Prigione murió este viernes a la edad de 95 años en su casa de reposo Orquidea en Alejandría, confirmó la Conferencia del Episcopado Mexicano tras expresar sus condolencias
Fue nombrado delegado apostólico en México el 7 de febrero de 1978, convirtiéndose en el primer nuncio apostólico en México cuando las relaciones diplomáticas con la Santa Sede se restauraron en 1992. Se retiró el 2 de abril de 1997.
El Prelado nació en Castellazzo Bormida, de la diócesis de Alejandría, el 12 de octubre de 1921, y fue ordenado sacerdote el 18 de mayo de 1944.
Entró en el servicio diplomático de la Santa Sede en 1951, habiendo prestado su servicio, sucesivamente en la propia Representación Pontificia en Italia, Gran Bretaña, Estados Unidos de América y Austria, cubriendo también el encargo de Delegado en la Agencia Internacional para la energía atómica con sede en Viena.
Una vez electo para la Iglesia titular de Lauriaco, el 27 de agosto de 1968, fue nominado Nuncio Apostólico en el Salvador y en Guatemala. El 24 de noviembre de 1968 recibió la ordenación episcopal.
Después el 2 de octubre de 1973 se convirtió en Pro Nuncio Apostólico en Ghana y Delegado Apostólico en Nigeria.
Después, el 7 de febrero de 1978 recibió el encargo de Delegado Apostólico en México, y convirtiéndose en Nuncio Apostólico el 2 de octubre de 1992.
Retirado del servicio Diplomático el 31 de mayo de 1997.
Durante su servicio diplomático visitó numerosas Iglesias locales, también para conferir la ordenación episcopal de muchos nuevos obispos.
